Have you ever scrolled all the way to the bottom of Jalopnik? No, past the ads. And past the other ads. And past the ones beyond the other ones. Well, a hidden gem is buried in this inconspicuous menu that is absurdly difficult to reach.

It’s almost as if they don’t want you knowing how much better Jalopnik used to be! Yes, Kinja has the ability to sort any blog by date.

All you have to do is scroll down to bottom, wait to make sure an ad doesn’t move in front of where you are clicking, and then click on this tiny low contrast gray link labeled “Sitemap”

So what meets your eyes when the link loads? An efficient, quick, minimalist interface that only functions this well because Kinja forgot to ruin it. Shhh, don’t tell them .

Yes, this is a well organized system by which you can be transported back to individual days in the Kinjaverse!

Pretty sure related posts is gone forever as in old ones are lost to time. If they re implement I doubt they will carry over.

But yeah I was genuinely surprised how a little bit of 2010 seems to have survived in this obscure menu where your user profile doesn't even show up in the corner.

I’d never, ever, ever go back. Tap to click and 3-finger drag are just so amazing, the way they reduce friction.

Any time I use a trackpad without tap to click, or (shudder) a mouse, I’m amazed at how much unnecessary work I’m expending.

My wife is still using a mouse, and she plugs it in whey she uses my Mac. The scroll wheel drives me crazy. And tapping instead of clicking is just so damned civilized.

Same problem, except there is more of an end in site. Too bad. Wouldn't take much either to apply this to user profiles. If you have a rough date you might find that easier.

I’ve been looking through a lot of early Ja lopnik posts and things were better back then. Of course it was easier back then too because they had nothing to lose and everything to prove.

You could also use it to see the posts of today without the laggy home screen.

I do wonder how long Jalopnik will last... If they keep David Tracy on board, I think they have some hope, but so many of their posts these days are just lazy reposts of other’s content. I feel like they may have pissed off enough makers that they just don’t have access to the cars & events that they used to. It sucks, but you have to play the game sometimes...

Kristen Lee was great on camera, they really should’ve capitalized on that. But now she’s off to bigger and better things. Same with Alanis King.

I enjoy a lot of Torch’s crazy stuff, but that’s pretty few and far between. I like Andrew & Tom as well.

Will be interesting to see what Rory’s plans are; haven’t really seen much yet.

His plans haven’t materialized yet, but I think there may have been slightly more actual content since he got on board. But still, look at any day in 2014 and then at yesterday and you just gotta wonder, “where did the content go?”

They are no longer cheeky outsiders attracting a niche audience turned off by mainstream auto news, they are mainstream auto news with a bad attitude and everyone knows this except them.

A lot of brilliant writers have been plucked from obscurity through the comments section of this corner of the internet. How can they not see they are casually running their community through a paper shredder?

Some posts here are higher quality than FP posts. Not usually, but sometimes. It seems like they just get free traffic from that so why was the FP and Oppo severed?

Someone kinda ruined it by trying to get press cars saying they wrote for Jalop/Oppo, and there were liability concerns about the writers here not sourcing their info properly, not citing sources/images.

Seems like there’s still a way to do it well, just needs a little more oversight than a simple share to Jalopnik.

Oversight seems to not be very prevalent in Jalopnik HQ based in what’s been going out lately. I usually try to use all my own images anyways but it doesn't seem like it would be that hard to hand pick a few good ones every few days. I wasn't around back then so I don't know how it worked.

The press car thing is just stupid. Who do you really think you are other than some small time forum browser anyways? We just have more fun than those other forums and that's the difference.

They do! tips@jalopnik.com is a distro that goes to all of the staff and the permalancers who man nights/weekends. It gets a TON of stuff, though, so don’t take it personally if no one responds.

I hate the new “you may like” list so much. Why the hell would I want more links back to what’s on the front page right now and what’s going to auto-populate underneath the post? Beyond idiotic. The authors know about the related content and are capable of picking out the good stuff.

Curated links are still in the system, so hopefully they’re saved somewhere. My farewell post had an awesome “greatest hits” section that’s no longer there and I’m pretty livid about it.

I get the vibe that the Kinja devs really care—it’s just that the herbs above them are incapable of running a site network beyond hiring more old white dudes they met 30 years ago who just slap more ads on things and call it a day. Since putting out a quality website is NOWHERE on the herbs’ priority list, they keep driving out good dudes (miss you, Ernie) and probably don’t give said devs the proper resources and headcount to maintain this place to its full potential.

I’ve only really had a conversation with one Kinja dev but she seemed very overworked and somewhat surprised I bothered to thank her. She basically said they don’t have the resources to do anything other than maintain and even then only barely. I would love to see those herbs wither from moral starvation.

More blindness to reality from our state government. I was reading in the NYT today about how much open dissent there is on the far right in TX, with groups of Republicans moving to censure the governor over his mask order. I’ve never been much of an Abbott supporter, and I certainly believe he bungled the opening of the state, but I praise him for the courage to buck his party and order masks. Unfortunately, if he gets ousted in the next gubernatorial election (when is that?) we might get that insane asshole Dan Patrick instead. Which would make the far righties ecstatic.

That sucks big time. I thought you had something locked in, since it seems strange that online publications aren’t desperate for content in days when you can’t do much more than sit at your computer looking at online news stories.

I for one find your writing delightful and refreshing. And I don’t get the impression you are an unpleasant person to work with. You’ll get through to someone. Of course in such a competitive field, you can’t get too buddy buddy with the new guy for fear they’ll take your spot. Everything about everything sucks right now. I hear you. Lord knows I have plenty sucky about right now. My sister just scraped my car against the TREE OF CAR CARNAGE in our driveway and I’m going to have to deal with that.

So, I will be praying for you for things to get more focused and less uncertain. Have some M O O D I took a few days ago during a few hours when it wasn’t raining.

Ha, you’re assuming publications’ owners care. All they seem to do is make cuts lately, especially now that less ad revenue is coming in from outside. They were slashing jobs by the thousands before this. I felt like everyone’s last choice then, so I really don’t stand a chance now.

You really are in a pickle, aren’t you? But you’ll get through it a better person for it. It just won’t be particularly fun in the meantime. You have a fun and uniq ue writing style that could be very valuable to a publication, so try not to take the rejections personally. It’s their loss, really, but it sure do hurt on your end.

I suppose I never thought about less ad revenue. More readers and less money coming in isn’t good for business. It does remind me of this silly FP ad that you might find funny. 7 seater Gladiator anyone? Sounds like keyword spam.
